Open Fill for free

Birdsuite Fill is a free web tool by Berlin Bird Studios for filling in PDF forms right in your browser: text fields, checkboxes, radio buttons and choice lists. The PDF is never uploaded, and you need neither an account nor Adobe Reader. Optionally, Fill locks the fields when saving, making your entries a fixed part of the page.

The problem

An application or registration form arrives as a PDF, and your browser only displays it or does not save the entries properly. Printing, filling in by hand and scanning again is tedious, and online converters want to upload the form with your personal data first.

The solution

Birdsuite Fill finds the form fields in the PDF and places input fields exactly on top of them. You type, tick and choose, all in your browser, and download the filled PDF.

How it works

  1. 1

    Open the form

Drop the PDF form onto the page or pick it. Fill shows how many form fields it found.

  2. 2

Fill it in right in the document

Type into text fields, tick checkboxes and pick options — exactly where they sit in the form.

  3. 3

    Save

Download the filled PDF, optionally with locked fields, or send it on via Transfer.

Features

No upload

pdf.js reads the form fields and pdf-lib writes your entries back — both run in your browser. The form stays on your device.

No Adobe needed

Nothing to install, no account to create: Fill runs in any current browser.

Lock the fields (optional)

Tick one box and the fields become a fixed part of the page when saving, so they can no longer be changed as a form.

Right in the document

The input fields sit exactly on top of the form's fields, so you see at once what goes where.

All common field types

Single- and multi-line text fields, checkboxes, radio buttons, and dropdown and list boxes.

Existing entries are kept

Fill picks up values that are already filled in and leaves read-only fields alone, so you can keep working on a saved form later.

Send via Transfer

If you like, the filled PDF goes straight to Birdsuite Transfer and from there to your recipients as a link.

No fields? On to Sign

If a PDF has no form fields and only needs your signature, Fill points you to Birdsuite Sign.

Data and privacy

Processing
Entirely in your browser. pdf.js renders the form and reads its fields, pdf-lib writes your entries into it; neither the document nor your entries are sent to our server.
Storage
Nothing. Fill stores neither the PDF nor your entries, not even in your browser — close the tab and it is gone. We only count anonymously how many forms are filled per day. Only if you choose "Send via Transfer" does Birdsuite Transfer upload the finished PDF to servers in the EU (Germany and France).
Processors
None. Your form reaches no service provider; only the page itself is delivered by our host, Host Europe in Strasbourg, France.

Test it yourself: Test it yourself: open your browser's developer tools (Network tab) and fill in a form. Your document never shows up there as an upload — only the parts of the Fill app are loaded.

What Fill can’t do

  • Only PDFs with real form fields: Fill cannot fill in scanned or "flat" PDFs without fields.
  • No free text: Fill only writes into existing fields, not anywhere on the page.
  • No digital signature fields — for your signature there is Birdsuite Sign.
  • Fill cannot open password-protected (encrypted) PDFs.
  • No drafts: Fill remembers nothing. Download the PDF before you close the tab.

Frequently asked questions

Is my form uploaded?
No. Fill opens, fills and saves the PDF entirely in your browser. Our server only delivers the page and counts anonymously how often a form was filled — no content, no file name.
Why can't I fill in a PDF?
Usually the PDF has no real form fields. That is the case with scanned forms or forms saved as images, and with PDFs created without fields. Other reasons: the PDF is password-protected, or it is an XFA form (often showing "Please wait …") that many programs other than Adobe Reader cannot fill in. After opening, Fill shows how many fields it found.
Are my entries kept when saving?
Yes. Fill writes your entries into the PDF's form fields; you can open the file again later and keep editing, in Fill or any other PDF program. If you tick "Lock fields", the entries become a fixed part of the page and can no longer be changed as a form.
Do I still need to sign an official form?
Often yes, by hand. Check the form or the authority's website: only where electronic submission with a simple electronic signature is explicitly allowed can you sign with Birdsuite Sign. Otherwise print the filled form and sign it with a pen.
Does it work without Adobe?
Yes. Fill runs in your browser; you need neither Adobe Reader nor any other program or account.
Does Fill cost anything?
No. Fill is free, needs no account, shows no ads and has no paid plan. There is no limit from our side; very large PDFs only depend on your device.
