Open Talk for free

Birdsuite Talk is a free messenger for voice messages between two people without a shared language, made by Berlin Bird Studios in Germany. Messages are transcribed in the browser and, where the browser supports it, translated. They are end-to-end encrypted and expire after 30 days. Talk needs neither an account nor a phone number.

The problem

The carer speaks Polish, the family speaks German. Or the landlord and the new tenant share no language at all. Translator apps help in a live conversation, but not with messages in between.

The solution

With Talk you speak in your own language. The other person gets the message as audio and as text, translated into their language when their browser has a translator. Everything is end-to-end encrypted, so we can neither hear nor read any of it.

How it works

  1. 1

    Connect

Open Talk and let the other person scan the QR code, or send them the link.

  2. 2

    Speak

Hold the record button and speak for up to 3 minutes in your language.

  3. 3

    Read

The message arrives as audio and text, translated into the language of the other device.

Features

Transcribed and translated

Your device's speech recognition or a Whisper model in the browser turns your message into text; the browser's built-in translator translates it.

End-to-end encrypted

The key lives in the QR link and never reaches our server. We only store encrypted packets.

No phone number, no account

No account, no number, no profile. A QR code connects two devices.

Hold to talk

Hold the button, speak, let go. Slide up to lock the recording and keep talking hands-free.

On several devices

Move your contacts to another device with a one-time link. Both stay in sync afterwards.

Notifications without content

Push notifications contain neither text nor contact names; only your device works out who wrote.

Install as an app

Put Talk on your home screen as a web app, no app store needed.

Expires automatically

Messages expire after 30 days and can no longer be fetched.

Data and privacy

Processing
Recording, transcription, encryption and translation happen on your device. If your browser uses the operating system's speech recognition, its maker may process the audio; otherwise a Whisper model transcribes fully locally.
Storage
Our server in France only stores encrypted messages, random device IDs, timestamps and sizes. After 30 days messages expire and are deleted the next time the conversation is fetched.
Processors
Host Europe (Strasbourg, France) as our hosting provider. Depending on your device, also the speech recognition and push service of your browser or operating system, such as Apple or Google; push notifications contain no content.

What Talk can’t do

  • No groups: a conversation connects exactly two people.
  • At most 3 minutes per message.
  • Voice only: no text, image or file messages.
  • Translation only in browsers with a built-in translator; otherwise you see the original text.
  • Without speech recognition in the browser, Talk downloads a speech model of about 145 MB once.

Frequently asked questions

How does translation work?
Your device turns the voice message into text, and the other person's device translates it. Transcription uses the browser's speech recognition or, where that is missing, a Whisper model right in the browser. Translation uses the browser's built-in translator; without one, you see the original text.
Which languages are supported?
That depends on your device and browser. Talk records in the language your device is set to and translates into the language of the other device, as far as its browser knows the language pair.
Can Birdsuite hear or read my messages?
No. Messages are end-to-end encrypted, the key only lives in the QR link between your devices, and our server sees only encrypted packets. If your browser uses the operating system's speech recognition, its maker, such as Apple or Google, may process the audio.
Do I need a phone number or app?
No. You connect your devices by QR code or link in the browser. If you like, install Talk as a web app; on the iPhone you need that for push notifications.
How long are messages kept?
30 days. After that they expire and are deleted from the server the next time the conversation is fetched.
How long can a message be?
Up to 3 minutes. Recording then stops automatically.
Are there groups?
No. A conversation in Talk connects exactly two people, but you can have several contacts.
